Don’t let your Agile team fall into the 64% trap

Jacob Orshalick

64% of people abandon their New Year’s resolutions by February. How many Agile teams abandon their retrospective resolutions by the next Sprint?

The ways we get stuck:

1. We see the same problem Sprint after Sprint, so we give up on resolving it.
2. We resolve to address the problem, but fail to find the root.
3. We find the root of the problem, but fail to create an actionable plan of resolution.
4. We create an effective plan, but we fail to follow through.

Effective teams:

1. Don’t give up on a problem you know is there. The timing just may not have been right before. Try again.
2. When you resolve to address a problem, find out the root cause. Keep digging until you come up something concrete that can be solved.
3. Once you have a clear problem statement, create a clear action plan with checkpoints along the way.
4. Stay accountable. Make sure you track progress and don’t let the team get discouraged. If you get off track, get back on the plan.

So remember…

My golf coach often dispels wisdom for golf and everything else in life. Quit focusing on the ball. Focus on the process.

Improvement comes when we know the steps to get better and follow through.
